The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Ethiopia has the capacity to defend itself from possible
terrorist attacks by al-Shabab, the East African affiliate of al-Qaeda.
In a press conference he gave Tuesday, Ministry Spokesperson Ambassador Dina Mufti said
Ethiopia has both the machinery and the institutional capacity to tackle terrorist attacks.
Ambassador Dina said terrorism is a threat to peace and stability as well as growth and
development of East African countries.
Previously Ethiopia was forced to take measures to fight terrorism alone, he said.
Currently, however, an opportunity has been created for the country to collaborate with
fellow East African countries as terrorism becomes a threat to the region and the continent
as a whole.
In this regard, he said, Ethiopia, Uganda, Djibouti and Kenya are conducting joint military trainings and sharing classified
information as part of a joint military operation against al-Shabab.
He affirmed that though the terrorist group is still a threat to the national security of Ethiopia, the country has built its capacity
and is on standby to thwart any possible terrorist attacks.
