Ethiopia’s carbon-free railway project hoped to win $1m support

The Ethiopian Railways Corporation (ERC) says it is working to
introduce carbon-free railways technology.
It says it is preparing a project proposal that would enable it to garner
US$1 million support from the international community in collaboration
with Climate Focus.
Climate Focus is UK-based advisory company committed to the
development of policies and projects that reduce greenhouse gas
ERC deputy CEO, Engineer Debo Tunka said railways expansion lies
at the forefront of Ethiopia’s plan to connect development corridors
with means of transport.
He said the stated railways technology is free from carbon emission as it makes use of electric power. Developed nations
ought to support such initiatives, he added.
Adriaan Korthuis, director of Climate Focus said similar projects in other countries including Brazil, China and India have
secured international support.
Ethiopia should also get support from the international community in its endeavor to build carbon-free economy, he said.
